Nazira Karimi was born in 1996 in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. She studied scenography and painting at the Almaty College of Applied Arts and earned her Magistra degree in Vienna in 2024. Shortly after, she returned to Central Asia, where she continues her artistic practice.
Her work explores collective memory and environment of Central Asia, focusing on the lasting impacts of colonization.
Nazira is an active member of several female artist collectives, dedicated to fostering art and knowledge production in the region.
Her work has been featured at prestigious international venues, including the 60th Venice Biennale 'Foreigners Everywhere' in 2024 and documenta fifteen in 2022, where she contributed to the public programme of the DAVRA Research Collective, initiated by Saodat Ismailova. In recent years, she has participated in various artistic residencies and has presented her films and installations across Asia and Europe.
